I woke up last Sunday morning at 10 am my usual time on a weekend …….don’t I just love sleeping in on a weekend….. still hazy, I dragged my heavy feet to the kitchen to get myself a cup of tea, now, the way my house is, the way to the kitchen is through the sitting room. When I got to the sitting room I momentarily paused as the happenings outside, children playing and the cars hooting seemed to be floating into the house with ease, that’s when I realized that one of the glass panes on the main door was missing, having noted that it was kind of loose the previous week, my mind went like “damn the rains and the winds, they must have blown it off”. When I was about to take another step to the kitchen contend with my conclusion, I noted the windows were wide open and wind was blowing into the house. “Damn, my sister, how can she leave the windows open overnight!!!” I thought to myself, just note, its not that am daft, its just that I am known not to rush into any conclusions whichever situation I am in and if it was someone else they would have put two and two together by now.
I took one more look around the house and noted that there were several things missing and that’s when it dawned on me and a shrill voice in my head told me “YOU HAVE BEEN ROBBED”
Fortunately for us, the burglar didn’t get his way, which was to remove the glass pane from the door, put his hand and open the door from inside as the keys were still in the lock. We had put a big padlock on the latch and that’s what saved us. He only managed to pull small electronic items through the window.
I always thought I was a tough nut, fearless and tough as a rock but ever since that day, the thought of me waking up in the middle of the night to find a hideous face hovering over me (pardon me, I think all thieves must have some hideous looking face) is enough to make me almost sleep under my bed every night, and I have also resulted to sleeping with all the lights in the house on. And the thought that someone is out there trailing me and watching my every move…eeeewwww…. Its such an eerie feeling.
That is scary. Been in a live burglary attempt. That scared me for weeks!
The year before last someone broke into my place. When I returned, I found my front door wide open and things missing. I was so freaked out because I had been gone for about four-five days and I slept with the lights on until I found a new place to live. I felt so violated so I know exactly how you feel.
Violated is the feeling and that someone is watching your every move is enough to make a cold sweat run down your spine.
